Memorial tablets in Holy Trinity church Tunbridge Wells

Charles NEWTON

Inscription: Newton, Lieutenant Charles, of the 16^th Bengal Grenadiers, 4^th son of John, of Calverley Park, Tunbridge Wells, killed at the Battle of Maharajpoor (Mararajpur) on 29^th December 1843 in his 23^rd year, buried the following day at the Camp Dunaila, where a monument has since been erected.

IN MEMORY OF/ LIEUT CHARLES NEWTON/ OF THE 16TH REGT BENGAL GRENADIERS/ FOURTH SON OF JOHN NEWTON/ OF CALVERLEY PARK, TUNBRIDGE WELLS, ESQ./ WHO, AFTER FOUR YEARS ARDOUS SERVICE IN AFGHANISTAN,/ FELL IN THE HARD FOUGHT BATTLE OF MAHARAMPOOR/ IN THE EAST INDIES ON THE 19TH DECEMEBER 1843,/ IN THE 23RD YEAR OF HIS AGE./ SEVERELY WOUNDED IN STORMING THE FIRST POSITION OF THE ENEMY/ HIS ARDENT COURAGE WOULD NOT SUFFER HIM/ TO LEAVE THE FIELD THOUGH REQUESTED TO DO SO/ AND IN LEADING HIS COMPANY/ TO THE ASSAULT OF THEIR SECOND LINE/ HE FELL PIERCED WITH FOUR OTHER BALLS/ AND DIED IN CAMP THE SAME EVENING./ HIS MORTAL REMAINS/ WERE CONSIGNED TO THE EARTH WITH MILITARY HONOURS/ ON THE FOLLOWING DAY, AT THE CAMP OF DUNAILA,/ WHERE HIS BROTHER OFFICERS/ HAVE SINCE ERECTED A MONUMENT TO HIS MEMORY/ EXPRESSIVE OF THEIR ESTEEM AND AFFECTION./ THUS DIED A YOUTHFUL SOLDIER, GENTLE, ABLE AND BRAVE;/ OF HOPEFUL PROMISE TO HIS COUNTRY./ BELOVED AND LAMENTED BY HIS COMRADES,/ EXPLORED NOW DEEPLY BY HIS SORROWING FAMILY;/ WHO YET SORROW NOT “AS OTHERS WHICH WHICH HAVE NO HOPE,”/ FOR THIS YOUNG SOLDIER WAS A CHRISTIAN,/ WHOSE FAITH WAS FOUNDED ON THE WORD OF GOD,/ AND WHOSE LIFE WAS RULED BY/ HIS HOLY PRECEPTS.

About Charles Newton

Charles Newton was the son of John Newton of Calverley Park, Tunbridge Wells. Mural tablet no 10 is for John Newton and his wife Anne who may be the parents of Charles Newton.

There are 23 memorial (or mural) tablets within Holy Trinity Church that we currently have records for. Some of these may be located under the floors or in cupboards and are not accessible. We intend to investigate and record these memorials at some point in the future.

Many of the tablets are not normally visible to the general public but may be viewed by prior appointment with Trinity Arts Centre. This is subject to performance timings as some of the tablets are on the stage and behind the scenes and even in cupboards.

Inscription: Rear Admiral Sir William Edward, Knight, Lieutenant Governor of Greenwich Hospital, born 19^th December 1790 at Bath, died 8^th July 1855 at Ems in Nassau, buried in the Mausoleum of Greenwich Hospital.

Harriet HAWLEY / Eliza HAWLEY

Inscription: Harriet, 2^nd daughter of Sir Henry, Baronet, of Leybourne Grange, Kent, died 6^th November 1842 aged 62 years at Brighton, also Eliza, sister of the above, born 31^st March 1791 died 28^th October 1864

Agnes Jane HORTON

Inscription: Agnes Jane Horton. She was married in this church February 18th 1846. Died at Brighton on July 25 1853, aged 33 and was buried at Speldhurst.

Location: 6 on map. This tablet is to the right of the stage behind the curtain directly above the Hawley tablet. It is only viewable by prior arrangement with Trinity Theatre.

Henry Churchill CROPLEY / Mary CROPLEY / Cybella CROPLEY / Edward CROPLEY / John William CROPLEY

Inscription: This tablet is erected by John Dodwell Churchill in memory of his affectionate nephew Henry Churchill Cropley late of this place who died 13th of November 1841 aged 26. He lived respected and died lamented. His remains are interred in the family vault at Bloxham in Oxfordshire.

Also to the memory of his beloved mother, sister and brother who died in the West Indies.

Mrs Mary Cropley died December 21st 1827 aged 45.

Cybella Cropley died November 13th 1831 aged 20.

Edward Cropley died October 27th 1833 aged 26

John William Cropley died April 24th 1847 aged 26.

Buried in the cemetery? No. In the family vault at Bloxham, Oxfordshire.

Inscription: Sacred to the memory of Louisa, the beloved and affectionate wife of Thomas Thomson Esq. M.D. of Belvedere, Tunbridge Wells who died on the 26^th April 1844.

Also of the above Thomas Thomson Esq, M.D., of Belvedere, Tunbridge Wells, Inspector General of Hospitals, who died on the 4^th August 1853.

Also of Elizabeth, wife of Arthur Dyott Thomson Esq, of Belvedere. Died deeply lamented 16^th December 1865.

Sarah Marianne POYNDER

Inscription: In a vault on the Eastern side of this churchyard are deposited the mortal remains of Sarah Marianne Poynder the beloved wife of Thomas Poynder of London who departes this life in the 50th year of her life on 11 September 1838. (unreadable sentence)
